The matching logic of working conditions for bridge and gantry cranes - the correct selection from factory structure to open-air yard

In mechanical manufacturing, component processing, and warehousing logistics enterprises, bridge cranes and gantry cranes are two types of lifting equipment that are frequently used. However, the differences in their support methods, operating tracks, and applicable spaces determine that they are each adapted to different working environments. Understanding the underlying structural logic is a crucial step for the purchaser to avoid selection errors and ensure the harmonious coexistence of equipment, building, and process flow.

Bridge crane, commonly known as "crane" or "overhead crane", has its main beam connected at both ends by end beams, and the wheels on the end beams are directly supported on the tracks laid by the crane beams on both sides of the factory building. The entire equipment runs suspended, with no support legs occupying the ground below the bridge, making it particularly suitable for enclosed workshops, assembly plants, and indoor warehouses that have already been built. In such scenarios, machine tools, assembly lines, or shelves are usually arranged on the ground, and bridge cranes can use high-altitude space to complete cross area lifting without occupying the working area on the ground. According to the lifting tonnage and operating frequency, bridge cranes can be divided into single beam and double beam structures - single beam with multiple electric hoists, simple in structure, light in weight, and suitable for the transportation of general components and semi-finished products; Double beams are equipped with independent lifting trolleys, which have strong rigidity, better adaptability to lifting height and span, and are suitable for assembly stations with heavy loads or frequent fixed-point alignment.

Portal crane, also known as "gantry crane", is characterized by independent support legs at both ends of the main beam. The wheels at the bottom of the support legs run along the track laid on the ground, forming a portal frame as a whole. Due to not relying on the cow legs or crane beams of the factory building, gantry cranes are often used in open-air freight yards, steel storage areas, prefabricated component yards, and some uncovered loading and unloading areas. Its span can cover a wide stacking area, and the space between the legs allows trucks or forklifts to pass through. For some places that require both indoor and outdoor continuous crossing, a "semi gantry crane" can also be used, with one side leg running on the ground track and the other side running on the high-altitude track inside the factory building, taking into account the strengths of both structures.

An often overlooked aspect of selection is the calculation of the reserved clearance and track elevation for the factory building. The bridge crane requires the factory building to consider the load of the crane beam and the position of the cow legs during the design phase. If the old factory building is renovated and a crane is installed, it is necessary to review whether the column spacing, roof load-bearing capacity, and track embedded parts meet the standards. For gantry cranes, attention should be paid to whether the ground track foundation is flat, whether the drainage is unobstructed, and whether there is sufficient safety stop distance at both ends of the track. In coastal areas or environments with frequent sandstorms, attention should also be paid to the impact of wind loads on the windward area of the support legs. If necessary, rail clamps or anchoring devices should be installed.

In the process of serving manufacturing enterprises in Yantai and surrounding areas, Gude Crane usually sends technical personnel to conduct on-site surveys of the current situation of the factory or yard, and based on the limited weight, common dimensions, lifting frequency, and span requirements of the customer's intended lifting objects, deduce the suitable crane form and lifting height. This approach of "seeing the site first and then deciding on a plan" can better avoid the hidden dangers of installation restrictions or operational interference in the later stage than simply ordering by tonnage. After all, the service life of a crane often lasts for more than ten years, and careful selection in the early stage is a long-term investment in subsequent production efficiency and safety.
